What is “Kotatsu” ?
The kotatsu is familiar to many Japanese people, but those who have never experienced a Japanese winter may not know what it is.
The kotatsu is said to have originated in the Muromachi period (14th century). A kotatsu has a heating hearth on the floor and a roof over which a futon is draped for warmth. In modern times, kotatsu tables are commonly used. A safe electric heater is attached to the underside of the tabletop, and the heat is covered by a futon, into which a part of the body is placed to keep warm. This saves electricity because you don’t need to heat the whole room to keep yourself warm.
Also, family members and pets naturally gather around the kotatsu. Winter time spent around the kotatsu with family and friends is very popular and fun. They play card games, have pot parties, and have a great time.
There is a electric heater under the table top.
